Black Family’s Problems Go Deeper than Illegitimacy: Meet Michael Lewis

Where the black family is concerned, the difference between leftists and Republicans is often that leftists refuse to decry illegitimacy (as opposed to alleged “racism”) as a problem causing black pathologies such as school dropouts, drug abuse, and crime. After all, as Gloria Steinem has taught us, “a woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle,” and it’s disrespectful and racist to suggest that a black woman needs anyone besides the state to help raise her children. Indeed, even to speak of black pathologies is “racist.” Conversely, Republicans think--when they permit themselves to think about such things--that black social pathologies will disappear, if only black parents married, preferably before having children.
But what I have seen in New York of American black men who are raising their kids makes illegitimacy look pretty good. On the rare occasions that I have encountered black American dads with their kids in recent years, the father either scowled at me with all the hatred he could muster, or cut in front of me on the street, or had his small son try and pickpocket me, while I waited on line for popcorn at the movies.
Which brings me to devoted dad Michael Lewis, of Victorville, California. Until recently, the 34-year-old Lewis was living with his wife and six-year-old son. That is, until the son decided to take dad’s loaded, .45 cal pistol to school.
Well, actually, it wasn’t dad’s gun, but the boy didn’t know that. I’ll let KTLA TV's report pick it up from here:
The school only discovered the gun, because the boy’s pants were sagging, for lack of a belt, and he was sent to the principal’s office. As someone helped pull up the boy’s pants, the gun fell down his pants leg, and slid out. Fortunately, unlike in the similar case involving New Jersey Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress, no one was shot.
The boy’s mother had sent him out to get something from the trunk of his father’s car, unaware that the latter had left the weapon inside. That would be the same mother who was unaware that her home was full of stolen property.
The boy was put in his mother’s custody.
Censorship note: At least KTLA showed the father’s picture; Fox refused to show even that much.

Investigators determined that the .45 caliber gun had been stolen during a November 2008 robbery, according to detectives at the Sheriff's Victorville station.
Investigators obtained a search warrant for the boy's home and found additional stolen property from several home burglaries including jewelry, a camera and a television, according to sheriff's officials.
They boy's father, 34 year old Michael Lewis, was arrested for receiving stolen property and possession of a firearm by a felon.
He was booked into West Valley Detention Center.
Lewis had prior felony convictions.
Officials say he may also face child endangerment charges.
